5343 Fumaroles
Noxious gases escaping from the crater wall of Vulcano. The first time I visited Vulcano was some years ago, in the company of a friend. As we approached the mountain we came to a man sitting in a little thatched hut beside the path. "Good morning", he said, "are you going to the crater? Two concessions? That will be 2 euros each. Thank you. And by the way, you are not allowed to walk right round the rim of the crater." "Why not?", I asked. "Because it's dangerous", he said, "there are scalding hot fumaroles and poisonous gases." Now, the very reason we had come to Vulcano was to walk right round the crater rim. So I said, "Well, my companion here is a professional geologist and I am studying for a degree in geology". (Which was absolutely true). "Oh, that's all right then", was the reply, "YOU are allowed to walk round the rim." So we did. Very carefully, And survived to tell the tale. This time round, there was no man in a little thatched hut beside the path collecting admission fees, and the group I was with did not attempt to walk right round the rim.
