Southport Clay Pavers
Long before modern concrete block paving was in use, kiln fired clay provided a cheap and durable paving material. In the late 19th century when the seaside town of Southport in the North West of England was coming into its own, the brick factories of Buckley in North Wales were chosen to produce the clay pavers for the rapidly expanding town. The Southport Paver was used extensively throughout the town and surrounding area and was noted for its wonderful colouring of indigo blue with touches of cinder red, gold and buff. Today, much of the paving has disappeared, or is damaged as it is taken up for utility works, but much does remain and is a handsome complement to any street (the example seen in the photo is on Botanic Road).
