Below the streets of Chester
The Canal Cutting
The Shropshire Union Canal passes through Chester in a deep sandstone cutting and follows the course of the old Chester Canal built in 1772 which connected Chester and Nantwich.
The photo is taken below the Northgate Street bridge, beyond which is the narrow bridge known as The “Bridge of Sighs”. This was a crossing built around 1793 to allow condemned prisoners to traverse the canal from the Northgate Gaol to a chapel in the Bluecoat School where they could receive their last rights before execution.
