Castell-y-Bere. 21
Set in the breathtaking landscape of the Dysynni Valley at the foot of Cadir Idris mid-Wales.
It was first built in 1221 by Llywelyn the Great and was only occupied and garrisoned for some 73 years by both the Welsh and English.
It was first built for the protection of trading routes into the southern borders of Gwynedd.
However, the Castle was surrendered by Madog ap Llewelyn to Edward 1 for the the princely sum of £80.00, (which in those days was a small fortune.) Edward 1 had the Castle reinforced, however in 1294 Madog ap Llewelyn returned and burned the Castle down...it was then totally abandoned and never used again.
