München-Riem
ca. summer 1968
ex-SE-ERC "Istanbul"
Douglas DC-7B
45088/723
Türk Hava Yolları (THY) - Turkish Airlines
(leased from Transair Sweden)
This aircraft had suffered a nose gear collapse at Riem on 20 January 1968 and run off the runway. Damaged beyond repair, it would remain at the airport as a fire trainer until it was completely destroyed in 1976.
Initially, the damaged aircraft was placed on the grass east of the Lufthansa maintenance hangar. By May 1968, the engines had been removed and the THY livery had been painted over in black. Some time in the early 1970s, the wreckage was moved to the eastern part of the airport near the village of Salmdorf. It can be seen in the background of many photos from that time.
Delivered to Eastern Air Lines as N819D in October 1956. To Transair Sweden in May 1965 and leased to THY from March 1967. Written off at Riem in January 1968.
