Swissair Coronados were occasionally seen at Riem in the early 1970s, substituting for the usual DC-9s. There’s an Austrian Airlines Viscount visible in the background of this shot.

 

HB-ICB was delivered new to Swissair on 18 January 1962 as the airline’s second Coronado, sold to MBB in April 1975 and broken up at Hamburg-Finkenwerder (XFW) the same year.

 

The Coronado was one of the fastest airliners ever, and Swissair bought eight of them for delivery in 1961 and 1962. HB-ICD was lost after a bomb explosion near Zurich on 21 February 1970 (it had been noted at Riem only a month before that, on 21 January 1970). The rest of the fleet was withdrawn in 1974. Two were scrapped (including HB-ICB), four were sold to Spantax, and one was transferred to the Verkehrshaus at Luzern, where it has been displayed ever since.
