Unsigned Oil on canvas, HMS Ajax

Frame size: 550mm x 420mm

This one is a family heirloom - we don't wish to sell it, but would be most grateful for a valuation.

It was painted during the First World War by an R. N. shipmate of my maternal grandfather, while they were both patients in hospital. The painting shows HMS Ajax (on which my grandfather was serving at the time) in Scapa Flow, with a German warship in the background. I believe it is a record of recent events in which the German fleet was scuttled.

My father carried out minor repairs to the canvas on reverse, after a hole was accidentally punched in it ... I vaguely remember him asking Christine Easton for advice at the time, although we won't hold her responsible for the result!
