This super specimen of one of Britain's bulkiest insects who was on my drive was about 70mm including his jaws, with which he tried to fend me off when I moved him!
They breed in rotting wood and as I supply piles of the same in several places in the garden we usually see them every year.
This chappy was extremely active and although I got several shots he didn't keep still for a second!
They fly June to August, usually around dusk, so this was unusual
