Hoverfly
A hoverfly of Syrphus rubseii or Syprhus vitripennis hovering in a wooded area of Hounslow Heath. At 500mm focal length at f/7.1, and a distance to subject of only 1.3 metres, the depth of field was only one milimetre in extent. The hoverfly itself is ten times longer than this, meaning only the compound eyes are in sharp focus, and the individual ommatidia (the individual units that make up the eye) can be seen.
