Silverlit - Galaxy Series 1985
One of my favorite Hong Kong toy manufactures back in the 1980s was Silverlit. They produced a wide range of inexpensive toys covering many subjects and interests. Naturally, I zeroed in on the Galaxy Series, their space stuff. As the line grew, it evolved into Multimac, a much more elaborate line of space vehicles that featured interchangeable parts. Several identical components appeared in both the Galaxy Series and Multimac.
Essentially, Multimac was copied from Tomy’s Tomics (called SciTech in Japan), but Silverlit created many new components. Mixing parts from the lines of both manufacturers was easy and could result in some great customs!
In later years, other toy companies, including Daisy (of B.B. Gun fame), repackaged and distributed the Multimac line in the United States. Daisy acknowledged the Silverlit identity on the packaging and the molded colors became rather flamboyant. Back in 1994, Thinkway Toys advertised the Multimac line with no reference to Silverlit. I’ve never found any Multimac toys in Thinkway packaging.
These advertisements are from my collection of toy and hobby industry trade magazines, notably the Toy Fair editions where new toy announcements were made. These ads weren’t intended to be seen by the general public.
