Forte Focardo fortress is located on a rock on the east coast of the peninsula around Capoliveri, between Naregno beach and Capo Perla.
The fortress stands on a rocky ridge that drops steeply into the sea.
The fortress was founded in 1678 during the Spanish domination of the island, its name coming from the commander of its construction, Don Ferdinando Gioachino Foscardo di Roquentes e Zuniga , who was then governor of the fortress of Longone and captain in the Kingdom of Naples.
The aim of the construction of the fortress was to have, together with the Forte di San Giacomo, a better defence system against the attacks from the sea.
Between the 18th and the 19th century, the fortress was often attacked, both from outside by the French Imperial troops during the War of the Spanish Succession, and from Elba itself, when a group of Capoliveri's inhabitants organised an anti-French protest, attacking and exploiting the fortress as well.
In 1848, the lighthouse was built, then assigned to the fourth category, with the task of marking the beaches, indicating the position of ships and the harbour approach, and drawing attention to possible dangers in the vicinity.
In the 1920s, the fortress hosted one of the greatest Italian writers, Raffaello Brignetti, who spent part of his youth here, as his father was the lighthouse keeper at the time.

Die Festung Forte Focardo befindet sich auf einem Felsen an der Ostküste der Halbinsel um Capoliveri, zwischen dem Strand Naregno und Capo Perla.
Die Festung steht auf einem Felskamm, der steil ins Meer abfällt.
Die Festung wurde im Jahr 1678 während der spanischen Herrschaft auf der Insel gegründet, sein Name stammt von dem Befehlshaber über seine Errichtung, Don Ferdinando Gioachino Foscardo di Roquentes e Zuniga , der damals Gouverneur der Festung Longone und Hauptmann im Königreich Neapel war.
Das Ziel der Errichtung der Festung war es, zusammen mit der Festung Forte di San Giacomo ein besseres Verteidigungssystem gegen die Angriffe aus dem Meer zu haben.
Zwischen dem 18. und dem 19. Jahrhundert wurde die Festung oft angegriffen, sowohl von ausserhalb von den franzoesischen Kaiserlichen Truppen während des Spanischen Erbfolge-kriegs, als auch von Elba selbst, als eine Gruppe von Einwohnern Capoliveris einen Anti-Frankreich-Protest organisierten und dabei auch die Festung angriffen und ausbeuteten.
Im Jahr 1848 wurde der Leuchtturm erbaut, der dann der vierten Kategorie zugeordnet wurde mit der Aufgabe, die Strände zu bezeichnen, die Position von Schiffen und die Hafenzufahrt anzuzeigen und auf eventuelle Gefahren in der Naehe aufmerksam zu machen.
In den Zwanziger Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts beherbergte die Festung einen der größten italienischen Schriftsteller, Raffaello Brignetti, der hier einen Teil seiner Jugend verbrachte, da sein Vater zu der Zeit Wächter des Leuchtturms war.
