Fisherman in polluted waters

Varanasi (India) - Despite the level of pollution of the Ganges which is causing health statistics to explode, it is astonishing to see professional fishermen still stalking fish in the waters of the river. In Varanasi, I never eat fish. Fresh or frozen, I avoid it like the plague.

However, this professional activity still has some success. And over the years, professional fishermen are still numerous. The sacred status of the Ganges placed under the protection of Shiva is equivalent for Hindus to a certificate of health immunity.

When I took a picture of this young fisherman, his day was over. He was coming back to the shore. But when he saw me pointing my lens, he stopped dead to strike a pose. The photo is less dynamic than I had imagined; but it still exudes a certain serenity.
