On a dreary summer day, Milwaukee Road GP20 #971 leads train #437 into the yard at Madison, Wi. The train is crossing West Washington Avenue, which looks to be closed due to the replacement of the former passenger main crossing. While certainly nowhere near the height of activity in the 40s and 50s, this shot provides some perspective on the area and traffic that held on through the late 70s and early 80s.

Eventually, all of the tracks crossing West Washington were removed with the exception of one, which is now the Wisconsin & Southern main through the west side of town and onto Prairie du Chien. Photo taken on June 13, 1978 by C.G. Wallenmeyer.
