Cryptic skink, ice plant flower

Oligosoma inconspicuum. Otago Peninsula. South African ice plant (Carpobrotus edulis).

This population on Otago Peninsula is entirely dependent on a small slope of South African ice plant, which holds enough cover and moisture to enable them to persist at the site. There are no cryptic skinks in the surrounding maram grass which is dominated by Oligosoma polychroma.
