Staying with my 'newly-refound' cousin, Mark, at his house in Wales in the summer, I was fascinated by signs in Welsh which I saw when out and about; the way a consonant could act as a vowel; the seemingly (to me) impossibilities of pronunciation; the 'borrowings' from other languages.

 

Here I noticed French (pont) and (old-fashioned) English (wan) = weak bridge=unsafe structure.... The end result would have been the same, in whatever language, if you had not followed the advice of the sign - wet feet etc etc plus some nasty bruises as well I imagine.
