Bike Rack

Bike racks are an example of public health because they promote cycling amongst the population. When the activity of cycling increases it improves public health also by both promoting physical activity and by decreasing vehicle use, thus reducing vehicle emissions (i.e. hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide – greenhouse gas). The increase in physical activity is necessary reducing the spike of overweight and obese rates in America. Individuals whom are overweight or obese, have an increased risk of developing Type I or Type II diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and so on. Physical activity has reduced majorly since technology has advanced. Children are spending more time in front of screens, and families are spending more transportation time in their cars.

A decrease in vehicle emissions is necessary for several reasons, one being that vehicles cause heavy traffic on roads and increases traffic congestion, greenhouse gas emissions and air and noise pollution. For example air pollutant emissions, like hydrocarbons and particulate matter, can lead to smog and adverse health impacts such as respiratory illness, cardiovascular disease and cancer, which are all detrimental health issues in our nation—heart disease being the leading cause of death in the United States.
