I wanted to start the project by choosing someone who was visually interesting and on their own. Frankly, I was pretty terrified - I tried to approach several other people, but despite my girlfriend being present I just backed away at the last moment.
Enter Mary. I was drawn to Mary by her hat, and the fabulous location she was already in. I stopped her by the river, explained my project and she was happy to let me make a portrait with her.
She asked why I chose her, and I was honest, I told her, "the hat!".
"I'm very much a hat lady, you see. My daughter got married in this hat, you know?".
Hooked on stranger #1. To say I was pleased is an understatement - elated.
