Bedtime storie

Pernilla stood at the edge of the garden where daylight softened into dusk. She'd been standing there for what felt like hours, caught between the warm amber glow behind her and the deep violet shadows stretching ahead.

She'd always been told to fear the darkness—that good girls stayed in the light, that wanting anything else meant something was wrong with her. But lately, the brightness felt too sharp, too exposing. It demanded she be certain, composed, always smiling. The darkness, though... the darkness whispered that she could be unsure. That she could be messy. That she could want things she didn't fully understand yet.

Her therapist had asked her once: "What does the darkness represent to you?" Pernilla hadn't known how to answer then. Now, watching the shadows deepen between the trees, she thought maybe it wasn't about darkness at all. Maybe it was about permission—permission to not have everything figured out, permission to explore the parts of herself she'd been taught to keep hidden.

She took a step forward, then another. The cool air wrapped around her like a question she didn't need to answer yet. A night bird called somewhere in the branches. She realized she wasn't lost—she'd just been standing still for so long, afraid to move in any direction, that she'd forgotten what it felt like to choose a path at all.

The darkness didn't swallow her. It simply held her, the way dusk holds the space between day and night, judging neither, rushing neither. She breathed deeper than she had in months. Maybe tomorrow she'd understand better what she was looking for. Maybe she wouldn't. Tonight, it was enough to simply walk forward, uncertain and alive, learning to trust herself in the spaces where light and shadow met.
