09 - IND R-1 to R-9 Truck

The “R” in the class designation stands for Rapid Transit and the associated number is the contract number. R-1 contract covered the car bodies whilst the R-2 contract was for trucks and motors. Consequently, the R-1 cars ran on trucks procured through the R-2 contract. The trucks used on all stocks up to R-9 were identical and this is one example. This view also illustrates the protective wooden boarding applied above the third rail to prevent staff from accidentally coming into contact with it. (2017 09 10_0157)
