UV filter affects bokeh - 2410_filter
Top : without UV filter
Bottom : with UV filter
Both pictures with D300+Nikkor80-400VR @ 400mm, f/8 1/250 iso400
I have been relatively disapointed by the bokeh quality of the Nikkor 80-400VR.
Out of focus objects (small branches, etc.) often appeared as splitted traces. Moreover, some backrounds tended to have an "anisotropic look" with diagonal or vertical colour traces.
Just to be sure, I did some tests with or without the 77mm Hoya HMC UV filter I usually carry on the lens to protect the front glass element.
It was a big surprise that most of my criticism of the lens bokeh in fact came from the front filter !
