My Artefacts: Magdeburg Gate, Novgorod St. Sophia's Cathedral

The Magdeburg (Korsun, Plock, Sigtun) Gates are a Romanesque bronze gate from the mid-12th century, located on the western side of the St. Sophia Cathedral in Novgorod, where the main entrance to the temple was located.

The gate was made in 1152-1154 in Magdeburg and was apparently intended for the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Plock.

In the version published by F. Adelung in 1823, this gate is a military trophy of the Novgorodians (Karelians, Estonians, Izhorians and Northern Russians), who sailed by sea in 1187 to the then Swedish capital of Sigtuna.
