Preening Eurasian Collared Dove in a Snowstorm

-3F/-19.4C, Winter Afternoon, Colorado

Preening in wet and cold conditions, for example, is important for the integrity of the dove's feathers. Almost one-by-one, they will add oil from a (uropygial/preen) gland, separate, smooth out, or whatever is deemed necessary to enhance the status of the feathers/plumage for warmth and flight. Much time and effort may go into this process.
