Alcuni studiosi di storia locale attribuiscono al costume l’origine orientale, tesi avvalorata da alcune abitudini delle donne di Scanno mentre altri attribuiscono l’origine longobarda.Diverse sono le modificazioni che, nel corso degli anni, il tradizionale costume femminile scannese ha subito, sino ad assumere, nella forma e nei colori, la foggia attuale più sobria ma comunque singolare rispetto ad altri costumi abruzzesi. Una evoluzione che si ferma agli inizi degli anni Cinquanta e che tuttavia non ha sminuito, nel tempo, la fastosità e la carica emblematica del costume femminile, soprattutto nella versione festiva.
Some local history scholars attribute to the costume the oriental origin, a thesis reinforced by some of Scanno's women's habits while others attribute the Longobard origin. Several are the changes that over the years the traditional Scani women's costume has suffered, to assume, in form and colors, the present more sober but still singular aspect than other Abruzzo customs. An evolution that stops at the beginning of the 1950s, but it did not, in time, diminish the emphatic and emblematic charge of the female costume, especially in the festive version.
