The Divided Village: Vigilantes in Lebanon

Maronite Christian vigilantes participate in armed patrols each night after the municipality-imposed curfew against Syrian refugees begins, led by the town's Chief - and only - Police. The rise of the Islamic State and other jihadist groups across the border have caused the residents to view Syrian refugees suspiciously. According to the Human Rights Watch, the curfews violate international human rights law and appear to be illegal under Lebanese law. Ebrine, Lebanon, Nov 2014.
