Schon in alter Zeit galt der Holunder als heilige Pflanze und wurde gern in der Nähe der Häuser gepflanzt. In ihm wohnte ein guter Pflanzengeist, der Haus und Menschen beschützte. Eine Geschichte der alten Baumgöttin ist das Grimm’sche Märchen von Frau Holle. Der Holunderbaum wurde als Baum der Ahnen und Tor zur Anderswelt angesehen. Das englische Wort für den Holunder «Elderberry» (Elder bedeutet die Alten, die Ahnen) erinnert noch an diesen Glauben. Bis in die Neuzeit gab es den Brauch, vor dem Holunder den Hut zu ziehen, und er durfte nicht mutwillig gefällt werden.
Elderberry was considered a sacred plant in ancient times and was often planted near houses. A good plant spirit lived in him, protecting the house and people. A story of the old tree goddess is Frau Holle's Grimm’s fairy tale. The elder tree was seen as the tree of the ancestors and gateway to the Otherworld. The English word for the elder "Elderberry" (Elder means the old, the ancestors) still reminds of this belief. Up until modern times there was a custom to take a hat off the elder and it was not allowed to be felled willfully.
