Key Deer

Blue Hole - Big Pine Key, FL

One of the more famous lower keys residents. Local breaking news at the time of my visit was that the screwworm outbreak had been officially declared eradicated. Good news for a critically endangered species without much hope of expanding its range. While hiking a trail on No Name Key, I ran into two state park workers who were hiking in to remove a remaining self-medicating station. This deer looks happy to be safe from a gruesome flesh-eating fate for now. Thank you genetically engineered sterile screwworm flies. Now if only tourists would stop feeding them junk food.
