Boss Lake, Collegiate West Segment 05, Colorado Trail, CO (4)

CO (Chaffee County)

Day 6

Alpine Tunnel (Collegiate West 04) to Boss Lake (Collegiate West 05)

There was a dayhiker at the Pass (12,105') where I took a short break. On descent, the side of my left knee began to hurt. Hopefully it will stop since it is mostly only hurting on the down hill.

My other roadwalk was inadvertant and came near the bottom where I saw some hikers at a trailhead. Although some signs indicated that this was not the CT, I went to check it out. The hikers were doing from Durango to Denver and appeared to come up via road. So I followed the road.

I continued on road but soon realized it probably was not the CT. I checked my CT Hiker App and sure enough I was not on the Colorado Trail. Oops! Fortunately the road and the CT eventually ran into each other again. Instead of backtracking I continued on the road until reacquiring the CT, maybe 1/2 an hour of road walking.

I stopped to make an early Lun/Din again and just as I was finishing, it started to rain and then hail. Temperature dropped quite a bit. I was below treeline and couldn't help but think of those who were not. It must've been very cold being exposed.

Fortunately the storm didn't last very long. My umbrella worked perfectly. I was planning to stay at Hunt Lake for the night but saw a decent spot by Boss Lake instead. I got tent up just before another storm. The sun did reappear and warm things up. Total miles for the day: 11.5.
