Josh Vis Movie Poster

a)How did you use Photoshop to create your image? Be specific and mention tools.

For this poster, a variety of tools were used. For the title text, stroke was used to bring a bigger focus to the titles. The spot healing brush was used to take the background of Rush’s first album into the movie poster, then exposure to bring out the darker lines. A poster edge filter was added to the band to help create unity with the background. The reds of the poster really draw the eye in contrast to the simple black and white colour scheme.

b)Describe how your poster creates the mood/genre of the movie.

In most music documentary posters, the main focus is the group themselves during their creative process, or just the story of how the band came to be. The black represents the serious nature in the later years but that there is still lighter moments in the film.

c)What design factors did you consider when creating your poster?

I considered the z-pattern of reading and I believe it applies to my poster. I also used the “go big” and the font consideration so the title stands out.

d)What do you think you did well with your poster?

I think the unity of how everything fits together and the consistency of the poster is very good. The theme is also captured very well. It shows the serious side of the music industry and the effect it can have on people, but also the joys of it.

e)What improvements could you make?

More colour because the documentary isn’t as dark as the poster makes it appear as.
