Commentary.
Between Tomintoul and Ballater is the 16th. Century (1530)
turreted house and Barracks of Corgarff Castle.
Peaceful and isolated, as it may appear, it has seen more than its fair share of dispute, fighting, destruction and affray.
Clan clashes for ownership and control have seen it burned and ransacked several times.
The building has also been used strategically by the English Army to quell the Jacobite Uprising of the early 18th. Century.
Corgarff has even been used by Local Authorities as a base to
curb the illicit whisky production, in the area, at times.
People now visit this region to view the Royal Estates,
fish, walk, climb and ski.
Historical Environment Scotland now maintain the site
and it is open to the Public.
It has also been designated as a “Scheduled Ancient Monument.”
