The apse of the basilica is a true jewel of mosaic art. The decoration of the basin and the triumphal arch dates back to 1140 - 1143, while the one placed in the apse walls, at the height of the windows, was built at the end of the 13th century: in the triumphal arch, Christological monogram, symbols of the Evangelists, Isaiah and Jeremiah (third quarter of the twelfth century), mosaic, work of Roman craftsmen.
in the apsidal basin, Jesus Christ enthroned with the Virgin Mary and saints (third quarter of the twelfth century), mosaic, of Roman craftsmen: the work articulated on three registers, in which are depicted:
in the center, Jesus Christ enthroned with the Virgin Mary between St. Peter, St. Cornelius, St. Julius, St. Calepodius, St. Callisto, St. Lawrence and Pope Innocent II;
above, the pavilion of the empyrean with the hand of God the Father crowning the Son;
below, Lamb of God with twelve sheep
L'abside della basilica è un vero gioiello dell'arte musiva. La decorazione del catino e dell'arco trionfale risale al 1140 - 1143, mentre quella posta nelle pareti dell'abside, all'altezza delle finestre, venne realizzata alla fine del XIII secolo:nell'arco trionfale, Monogramma cristologico, simboli degli Evangelisti, Isaia e Geremia (terzo quarto del XII secolo), mosaico, opera di maestranze romane.
nel catino absidale, Gesù Cristo in trono con Maria Vergine e santi (terzo quarto del XII secolo), mosaico, di maestranze romane: l'opera articolata su tre registri, nella quale sono raffigurati:
al centro, Gesù Cristo in trono con Maria Vergine tra san Pietro, san Cornelio, san Giulio, san Calepodio, san Callisto, san Lorenzo e papa Innocenzo II;[13]
in alto, Padiglione dell'empireo con la mano di Dio Padre che incorona il Figlio;
in basso, Agnello di Dio con dodici pecore
