Phosphorus-bridged rhodol dye just after addition to water/dioxane mixtures. Left to right: 0 to 99% content of water (polar solvent) in dioxane (non-polar). This phenomenon, i.e. change of dye's colour in response to the solvent polarity, is known as solvatochromism.
