On the way home 20260530--102
43159 Rio Warrier and 43025 Exeter power 1Z45 16.45 Saltburn - Princes Risborough, the return leg of UK Railtours' "Teddy's Nook". The preserved 125 Group HST is pictured passing Colton, south of York.
I'd originally planned to photograph the return leg on Tees-side, at Newport East Jn. where it was booked to cross from the Up Goods to the Up Main (a shot I'd done back in August 2012 - see this photo). However, when I arrived and parked the car nearby (you need to park a short distance away and walk up onto the bridge) the clouds had rolled in and weather maps suggested they were going to thicken. But, further south the clouds were forecast to stay away and I was actually driving home straight after photographing the HST... and I remembered the shot at Colton had still been clear of vegetation the last time I'd considered going there. But would it still be clear?
Provided I set off straight away and didn't get stuck in any traffic jams, I reckoned I'd make it with a little bit of time to spare - and I did. I was pleased to see a reasonable number of people here, and relieved to find the lineside was indeed clear where it needed to be.
1Z45 was on time as it approached York, following LNER's 1E21 (801204) - but 1E21 was a few minutes late, and 1Z45 was held just before York station while 1E21 set down and picked up passengers. As a result, 1Z45 was five minutes late when it reached Colton Jn., just after the sun had gone behind a band of thin cloud which took the edge off the brightness a little, particularly in the foreground. Of course, a minute or so later the sun cleared the thin cloud, but just too late. However, it was still bright when the train passed, and very little work was needed in Photoshop to improve the brightness.
This shot brought a very successful May to a close.
