Shaker Red Two, 26 June 1943

P-47C serial 41-6337 flown by LT Eugene E. Barnum, Jr, 61st Fighter Squadron, 56th FG. Bomber escort mission to Villacoublay, France.

 

During the course of his combat tour, Barnum was officially credited with two confirmed aerial victories.

 

Eventually promoted to the rank of Captain, Barnum was KIA on 2 December 1944 flying P-47D serial 44-19739 (coded HV-A). While maneuvering for a deflection shot on an ME-109, Barnum's aircraft was struck by a 63rd Fighter Squadron Thunderbolt flown by 2LT Wyman A. Baker (P-47D serial 42-28741, coded UN-C); both pilots died in the collision.

 

MACRs 10799 and 10801.

 

This aircraft was lost 31 December 1943; LT William A. Mrangello perished in an unsuccessful ditching attempt in the English Channel (MACR 1861).
