Brunswick Tunnel, Harrogate

Built to serve Harrogate's first rail station named Brunswick this tunnel was not a necessary feature but was built cut and cover to hide the line away from the affluent residents of Harrogate. It was only in use for around 20 years before being closed around 1862 meaning that the tunnel was out of rail use for about 156 years at the time visited. Later the tunnel was used as an Air Raid Shelter 80 years after it had been abandoned as a rail tunnel. This too was abandoned by 1942 and had been so for 74 years or so at time of visit.
