Flowers Against the Church

If you look at the previous photo, you'll see where these flowers grow ...

It took me a while to find out what they were: wildflowers called 'Red valerian' (Centranthus ruber). They can be found in the wild as 'garden escapes'. Both its leaves and its root are edible.
