Sir Basil Hudson-Landry
Not Quite New Year 2013 Yet
I need to thank Yahoo! and Holly Madison for the inspiration for this one. I'd been reluctant to draw a New Year's 'toon because I was afraid any baby I drew would just end up looking like a smaller version of my Hermann Goering/Mad Doctor/Dungeon Master/Self-Deprecating Self-Portrait Guy (who only managed to look halfway benign as Xmas 2011's Salvation Army Guy), which is to say, the fellow who appears in this scene as Somewhat More Than Slightly Gonzo Gynecologist Guy.
I had no idea who Holly Madison was (I Googled her later), but just when I was wondering if I should bother to even try a New Year cartoon, my Yahoo! headlines had a picture of her "showing her baby bump", in their words, at some event somewhere, and I realized, "Hey, wait a minute--drawing a baby is easy: you just draw it in utero, using the MS Paint circle/elipse tool instead of the line and pencil tools to draw My Little Bimbo's belly!"
So, thanks Yahoo!, and thanks to Ms. Madison! And, of course, thanks to My Little Inherent Artistic Genius for its ability to immediately grasp the obvious when left with absolutely no other choice but to do so! Perhaps I should thank the father as well, but, for one thing, I didn't Google enough to find out who he is, and for another thing, well, you know, I figure doing his bit was all the thanks he really needs; I mean, like I said, I had no idea who she was, but from the looks of her I didn't figure his tasking in the five-paragraph op order for this mission exactly qualified him for hazardous duty pay (or even time-and-a-half, for that matter).
Ironically, while putting on (what I thought were) the finishing touches and going through the free clip art on the web for a festive New Year frill for the monitor screen, I ran across a thumbnail of a baby who I thought would (with a little modification, of course) fit right into one of my cartoons, and figured what the hell--given the running start that the last few months of 2012 gave us to build up speed for the midnight leap over the Fiscal Cliff, a prenatal version of My Little Ogre might be just a fitting icon for 2013.
So, sincerely hoping for the best (but always bearing in mind an old friend's adage that if you always expect the worst you'll rarely be disappointed), HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
