Fleur de Lys
Macro Mondays theme Backlit
Did you know that the Fleur de Lys emblem is based on the iris flower? It wasn't until I was taking these photos that it occured to me that these irises look very much like the Fleur de Lys. Looking it up I discovered that Louis VII of France loved the iris and he officialized it as exclusive royal decoration by wearing a blue robe with golden irises on his coronation. Because he favoured the iris, the flower was called "Flower of Louis" (fleur-de-loy) in his time, which sounded very much like "the flower of lily" (fleur-de-lys) in French; thus many people assume that Fleur de Lys is based on the lily.
Anyway enough of my ramblings. This iris has been cropped to fit in with the groups regulation sizing and measures 5-6cm each way. Taken in my garden, early evening whilst the sun was shining.
