The Face-off

This is one of my all time favorite photographs. The face off of two Donga fighters, the tension is palpable. These Suri men are moments away from engaging in a very intense stick fight and a lot is on the line. You can see it in the faces. It is very important for young Suri men to do well in a Donga fight. A lot of pride is on the line. These fights (which are now illegal to photograph) are very violent and serious injuries and even death can occur. I got lucky with the light and the rain that day as well. I have photographed other Donga fights in bright noon day light. This time the clouds rolled in and the rain started to come down at the perfect moment! It really adds to the drama of the scene. I have a whole Donga portfolio I will eventually upload.
