Herbert Trevett, CEF - Almost certainly: Private Herbert Edward Diffey (Service Number: 79392), 31st Bn., Canadian Infantry; died 6 June 1916, aged 29; name recorded on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen; son of James Bushrod Diffey and Emma Diffey, of Newlands Cottages, West Lulworth, Wareham, England; [I am convinced that this casualty should properly be named Herbert Diffey on the memorial; Herbert's father, James Bushrod Diffey, first married Emma Churchill in 1872, and Herbert Edward Diffey was born to them at Bradford Peverell in 1887; this Emma died in 1888 and, in 1892, James Diffey married another, Emma Trevett, who already had a son named Herbert, born at Dorchester in 1888 (and baptised at Fordington on the 26th August 1888); both Herberts were living with the family at Winfrith Newburgh at the time of the 1901 Census); Herbert Trevett joined the Dorset Regiment in 1914, serving with the 5th Battalion until he was wounded in August 1915, afterwards serving with the 13th Loyal North Lancashires until his discharge in June 1918; the service records made available by Archives and Records Canada make it clear that the Herbert Diffey that served with the 31st Bn., Canadian Infantry was born at Bradford Peverell on the 31st December 1886 and had a father living at Bere Regis; at the time of the Canadian Census of 1911, Herbert E.
