THE HAMPSHIRE REGIMENT, born on the 23rd March, 1881, was the second son of J. Fidler, of Romsey, Hants. He was educated at Romsey School, and enlisted in the Hampshire Regiment in February, 1899. He served with the 2nd Battalion of his regiment in the South African War, receiving the Queen's medal with two clasps for his services and became Sergeant- Major in June, 1912. He was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant in the Hampshire Regiment in September, 1914, and was posted to the 1st Battalion. In February, 1915, he was gazetted Captain in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, but was killed in action on the 26th April 1915, while still attached to the 1st Hampshires. Captain Fidler was mentioned in Sir John French's Despatch of 31st May, 1915, and had been awarded the French Médalle Militaire for his services in the field. His Commanding Officer wrote: "There is not an officer or man in the regiment who has done better work during these awful eight months of war, and his name would certainly have been mentioned again for distinguished service? He is a real loss to the regiment, and his memory will always be honoured by us. I was close by when he was killed. It was early in the morning of the 26th … a rumour came up that the Germans were getting round our left in the night. I told Captain Unwin to take half his company and go for them. It turned out to be a false alarm, so Captain Unwin sent your husband and his platoon back to the trench. The mist was clearing then, and the enemy's riflemen began sniping at them. Your husband called out to his men to hurry and get down into the trench, but he himself stayed up, urging them on bravely, though unwisely, and a bullet hit him in the head. He was killed instantly. … I hope that it will be a consolation to you to know what a splendid reputation your husband has left behind, and what a grand example he has given to all of us and to the whole country. Not only was he brave in battle and a gallant leader, but he was loved by all his men for his pluck and cheerfulness in the most miserable circumstances. I never saw him depressed; he was always cheering us up." Captain Fidler married, in April 1904, Bessie, eldest daughter of J.
