PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE: PRIME MINISTER PRESENTS BADGES TO FALKLANDS VETERANS ONBOARD HMS LIVERPOOL
The Royal Navy warship HMS Liverpool today played host to the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom as he visited Rosyth Royal Dockyard. The Rt Hon Tony Blair MP was welcomed onboard 25 years to the day since the Argentine invasion of the Falkland Islands.
The purpose of the visit was for the Prime Minister to meet HMS Liverpool’s ship’s company and military personnel who served in the Falkland conflict, whilst also seeing first hand the important part that the local region plays in supporting the Defence effort, the latest product of which is the completion of HMS Liverpool’s 3-month upkeep period and imminent return to active duty within the Fleet.
HMS Liverpool, which is 25 years old this year and herself deployed to the Falkland Islands in 2006 as part of the ongoing mission in the South Atlantic, was the perfect platform to host the veterans, drawn from the Scots Guards and Royal Navy. The nine met the Prime Minister on the bridge of HMS Liverpool and were presented with Veterans’ badges and certificates to recognise their military service 25 years ago. They were then taken on a ship’s tour, which included witnessing a simulated air defence exercise from within the modernised Operations Room. Continuing the theme of technological advances and change over 25 years they also observed a demonstration of current naval fire-fighting and damage control techniques, many of which were adapted and developed from lessons learnt during the Falklands conflict.
Looking to the future, the Prime Minister then went on to learn in more detail of HMS Liverpool’s recent upkeep period, what it means to the local economy and how it contributes to the wider defence interest. The £7.135 million package has included modifications to the 4.5 inch gun to enable a greater firing range, plus also upgraded satellite and high frequency systems, including Bowman, which will allow great
