Cliff on a Seashore from Four Small Landscapes 1597-1600
Hendrick Goltzius, Dutch, 1558-1617
Goltzius’ use of blue paper eliminated the need for tone blocks to provide depth. The Seashore and Waterfall both have a black line block with tone blocks of two different colours to cerate the artistic effect. These woodcut are dramatically different from the Goltzius’ landscapes etched by Simon Frisius on view in the exhibition. These are our favourite prints ad we hope to make a complete set of the two tone versions of the woodcut landscapes.
