Title: Digger Logs and Deflectors
Location: Wildcat Brook, Petite Rivière Watershed
Date: September 2014
In this photograph, staff from the Bluenose Coastal Action Foundation is finishing up installing a digger log and deflector in Wildcat Brook. These structures restore fish habitat by encouraging the deepening, narrowing and natural meander of a stream to reoccur in areas that have been straightened in the past to maximize area for land use. Over time, pools and gravel beds form downstream of the logs. This recreated habitat serves as cover, resting areas and spawning areas for fish travelling upstream and also helps to oxygenate the water creating quality habitat for fish and aquatic invertebrates.
