Northern lapwing (Vanellus vanellus, tofsvipa) chicks on a field.
I saw these chicks when heading out for a photo-tour at a local nature reserve. When I returned the farmer owning the field had sadly plowed over this area. I could not locate the chicks and assume they perished. I was saddened and angry at myself that I couldn't save the chicks of one of my favorite birds. The chicks stay completely still when scared and almost look like rocks. It's impossible for the farmer to see them from his tractor. But it's such a waste of lives.
