Having utilised Interstate 40 from Barstow, California through Arizona and into New Mexico, it was time to leave this well travelled road. At Tucumcari NM, the road to Dalhart TX was taken, travelling north-east for Wichita, Kansas City & St Louis.
En-route was the former Rock Island crossing of the Cimarron River near Arkalon KS.
The bridge built in 1939 replaced an awkward crossing of the river at Arkalon which had been used since 1888.
The bridge is 1,269 feet long.
About 30 minutes was spent here. As I was pulling away an eastbound Union Pacific freight crossed the bridge, oh well!!
