FC Machacarmarca - Uncia railway, Bolivia in the 1950's
A photograph from Sulzer Brothers publicity material highlighting the purchase of two diesel-electric locomotives by the Patino organisation for use on the FC Machacamarca - Uncia line.
The line was about 63 miles long, meter gauge and ran from a connection with the main line at Machacamarca to the mining town of Uncia.
Maximum elevation on the line was about 14,400', the steepest grade was 1 in 40, with a ruling grade of between 1 in 58 & 1 in 63.
The line opened in 1920 and closed circa 1990. The two diesel locomotives are still extent, one in the museum at Machacarmarca, the other in railway workshops at Ururo.
This photograph is believed to be about six miles north-west of Uncia. The eastern half of the line gave the engineers the most problems and is the most spectacular.
My interest in this photograph caused me to visit Bolivia in 2002.
