Evaluation!
The night series for me was very successful in communicating my intended message relating to the impacts of unnatural light on plants. The way that leaves allow the light to pass through, highlighting their internal structure reflects on the idea that the lights are effecting them internally. I would definitely like to take this series further, and explore more of the effects of excessive light pollution within urban areas. While I hugely enjoyed the Night series, I had less success with the virtual project. Partly I think this was because I was so set in my idea for the first series, that I developed the second series to work around this. The virtual series was also incredibly limited in resolution, relating to the original content being captured by 360 cameras. To attempt to retrieve a relatively normal image from this required cropping the edges, and the resolution prevented any zooming. I explored a number of spaces through Google streetview, examining the way nature had impacted upon man made structures in the wake of the Kumamoto earthquake (April 2016). Many of these were interesting, particularly the Kumamoto castle which had crumbled in some sections, but I felt they didn't link as strongly to the first series. Within the scene that I chose there were a couple of spots that I wished the person capturing the scene had stood, as these would have given me more angles from which to communicate the scene. Overall it was fascinating being able to move through and experience some idea of these spaces as if you were walking through them, but very limiting in photographic output.
