Stranger #68 - Vera
I met Vera on the Gateshead side of the Millennium Bridge.
Sitting alone on the steps, she was eating her packed lunch, watching the world go by. I interrupted her quiet contemplation with my usual 'hello' spiel, and, a little wary at first, Vera and I soon started chatting.
Vera had lived in Newcastle for 60 years, working in the NHS. She shared her thoughts on the EU referendum result and told me that she had walked miles around Newcastle that morning on (as she called it) her own 'pilgrimage' - seeking comfort in the hustle and bustle of the town centre, trying to reassure herself that nothing had really changed.
Vera chose to have her photo taken standing on the bridge, admiring the Baltic with the Tyne Bridge in the background. As I took photos, a lone piper played 'Amazing Grace.'
It was a very poignant moment.
From a photography point of view the harsh sunlight caused havoc, but I hope I've done justice to this lovely, gentle lady on her day of pilgrimage.
