S3552 - Side Hill
NS338695, LR63.
HISTORY
The pillar was completed on 29th November 1945, the cost is not on record. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NS77/T79 in the Glasgow secondary block during 1947. This station was levelled to second class precision in 1952 with the reconnaissance of secondary block NS29, Greenock. This trig point was last maintained by the Ordnance Survey in August 1978.
SITE VISIT
Parking limited but room to park in the south entrance to the derelict Balrossie School. Approaching from the east, the best route up is via the grazing fields north of Slates. There are two gates to pass through. Open grazing top. The pillar is in good condition. The spider centre is open. Flush bracket S3552 faces SE, compass measurement 142°. All four sight holes are open but the innards are filled with debris. Full 360° panorama with some long views. There is a local view overlooking Kilmacolm.
