S6997 - Scales Moor

HISTORY

Pillar completed 28th May 1952 costing £20.10s.0d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NY45/T63 within the Carlisle secondary block during 1953. Flush bracket S6997 was levelled for height to first class precision, tertiary standards in 1974. Routine maintenance by the Ordnance Survey was last undertaken in June 1983. This marker was later visited by the OS on 7th August 2000.

 

SITE VISIT

Parked on NW verge beside gate at NY582433. Overall approach from ESE keeping to higher ground and following field boundaries. West side of grazing field in front of wall. The pillar is in good condition. Spider retains OS centre cap with deep indented letters. The flush bracket faces east, compass measurement 91°. Vented through west sight hole. Extensive views to Northern Pennines and Lakeland Fells. GPS spot on! More recent photographs indicate that this field also serves as arable land.
